New Tie Designs for Father’s Day and beyond

I just added a couple of necktie designs to my Zazzle store. I was trying for a unique and yet classic look.  Check out the designs and the details below.

Here are the designs as posted on my Zazzle store:

More Digital Art

Here are examples of two new images I edited in Adobe Photoshop. The first is a flower stand just before Easter with spring flowers on it. I tried to create a kind of pen and ink with watercolor mixed media effect. after duplicating the layers, I traced the edges using the “find edges” filter. I had to use the reduce noise filter, then manually erase some of the result so that the pen didn’t look splotchy. I had to process the white flowers separately so I could get enough contrast for the edges to be found. I even kicked the layer over to Adobe Illustrator to trace and fill out the lines, deleting the “white” so the background would show through.

Next I edited the lower layer to look like water color. Generally, I use the “posterize” command to reduce the number of colors to what begins to look like paint, you have to experiment depending on the subject. I apply some brush effects, then blur it a little. I guess I’ll have to pay attention to just what I do, since a lot of it is experimenting and adapting as I go.

Lastly for this image, I combined the layers, again in Adobe Illustrator. You can find a larger version of this on my website (click on the image).

Also, I just added this design to a tie on my Zazzle site. It would make a nice Father’s Day present. You can find it here.

Viola Flower Painting

A picture of a Viola flower I took in my neighborhood.

The second was a picture of a small viola (a tiny pansy-like flower) that I took in my neighborhood the other day. I turned the flower itself into the “painting” using similar tactics to what I outlined above. I wasn’t satisfied with the background because it still seemed too photo-like. I wanted it to look like an artist just kind of splashed the right oil colors on and smeared them around to fill the background. I ended up using the smudge tool to get the colors to run together and to emphasize the ones I wanted. Then I used the Paint Daubs filter with the option set to Dark Rough, the brush size big and played around with the sharpness until I got the effect I wanted. I still didn’t quite like it, so I ran it together a bit more with a tiny bit of Surface Blur.

I hope you like this.
